Free Halo 3 content released today

Bungie have revealed that their multiplayer map “Cold Storage” for Halo 3 will be distributed free today via Xbox Live Marketplace. They also added that the price of their ‘Premium’ Legendary Map Pack will drop to 600 Microsoft points (a saving of 200 points) today.

PS3 Home service still on track to launch in autumn

Sony?s PlayStation Network director of operations has said that Home is still on track to be launched fully this autumn. In a recent interview he said “The Home open beta is still on schedule for release later this fall”.

There have been fears that when the server fully launches it will still be in beta, however we have been assured that this will not cause any issues and that home will be a fully robust high quality service.

Everyone is hoping that home will be released this autumn and not be delayed any further.

Red Ring of Death Hits Game Consoles Xbox 360 Part 1

This week the Game Consoles .co.uk xbox 360 got hit by a case of the Red Ring Of Death. We were not overly worried, if anything we are a little pleased, it means we get to see what the Microsoft support of this problem is.

So far, so good, well registered our xbox 360 into our xbox live account (which then told us our xbox was no longer under warranty - again not a problem as we know that RROD problems have an extended warranty).

We clicked on the register console for repair button, ticked the box to say we can see three red lights on the Ring of Light.

We now have a an email with all the info for sending off the xbox 360, we will keep you updated with the progress. In the meantime were off to get our Xbox 360 Elite to tide us over.

Major Developers Support PS3 Trophies

Firmware 2.40 was unleashed today and several games are already lined up to make the most of the new Trophies system. Super Stardust HD was the first game to leverage the Trophies system.

Movie downloads coming to the PS3.

Sony’s CEO Kaz Hirai has announced that PS3 users will soon be able to download movies via their PS3. Very few details have been announced, however the movie download service should be avaliable in the US this summer, Europe should be close to follow.

PS3 Users will be able to HD movies movies for around $6 each when the service is launched in the US. I will be interesting to see if the uk cost is ?3 (appox $6 and a fair rental price) or ?6.

Sony Releases Video To Demo PS3 firmware 2.4

Sony has released a video to show off the features included in their next firmware update (v.2.40) for the PlayStation 3.

The video was posted on the US PlayStation blog and can be viewed here.

In this video Eric Lempel (Director of PlayStation Network) talks about the new features. This video is just the first to be released and more are expected soon.

The Firmware update is expected to be available within the next week.

Rainbow Six Las Vegas 2 Fan Pack Announced

The downloadable Fan Pack for Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Vegas 2 should be released in July on the Xbox 360 & Sony PS3.

The pack will include 3 new maps including the classic original map Calypso Casino (a fan favourite) the other two maps are the night-time maps Murdertown and CQB Training.

New ranks above Elite have also been added and a new setting called High Stakes has been added, this will turn off health regeneration, disable your radar, remove aiming assistance, basically turn the game into one for hardcore players only.

Subbuteo coming to the DS exclusively

Subbuteo is coming of age! Subbuteo is being released exclusively on the Nintendo DS. The gameplay is being kept as inkeeping as possible with players using the DS stylus to flick its players around the pitch as well as defend, attack, pass and shoot.

New to Subbuteo?

Fear not the game will also come with a tutorial to help you get to grip with the the official Subbuteo rules.

Subbuteo will be available exclusively on Nintendo DS in September 2008.

Xbox users get DRM transfer tool

Microsoft has released a DRM (Digital Rights Management) transfer tool for transfering content licences for your xbox 360 content.

Whats the DRM tool for?

Well if in the past you wanted to upgrade your Xbox core to the Xbox 360 Elite for example (or if you had to replace your Xbox 360 for some reason) then you would have lost any games you
downloaded via Xbox Live.

Microsoft have probably realised that if you have downloaded 40 games this could well stop you from upgrading to the Xbox 360 Elite, so they have released a tool that allows you to transfer
your content and their DRM licences from one machine to another. In order to stop people just transfering them about all their mates machines, you can only do the transfer once a year.

The transfer is very quick to do and there is plenty of content and videos online to help you with the process.

PS3 has lost Sony $3.3 Billion

Sony has filed it annual SEC report which shows that the company is loosing money.

According to the report the company has lost $3.3 billion on the PS3, this loss is thought to be a result of “strategic pricing”.

The Report indicated tat even if the PS3 is very sucessful it could take much longer than expected to recoup the investment, which could further impact Sonys bottom line.

At the time the PS3 was released many people thought it was too expensive for the mass market of game console users and this report seems to back up that view.
